Methodology

Forbes Advisor uses an unbiased five-star rating system to rank and rate each company researched. This system looks at four information categories: pricing, general features, additional features and third-party ratings and reviews. When it came to pricing, we wanted to see if there was a free trial or free version available and then determined if the pricing was considered high or not.

When considering general features, we wanted to see if the software solution offered a mobile app as well as an online portal. Preference was given to solutions that offered applicant tracking, payroll and benefits administration, time tracking, e-signatures and learning management tools. We also considered if there were alerts or reminders offered.

The additional features that we considered important were software integrations to ease workflow, shift scheduling options and engagement tools. Preference was given to companies with custom branding and live customer support.

Finally, we considered what major review sites had to say about the software and what they were rated. Preference was given to companies that had a 3.5-star or better rating on G2 and Capterra.

How To Choose an HRIS System

There are a lot of HRIS systems to choose from. When making your decision, consider these three areas before you finalize your purchase.

The first area to consider is the price. An HRIS system should easily fit into your budget and save you money on human resources personnel. Look for a solution that easily scales without breaking the bank. Remember that these solutions charge per member, which can add up quickly for large organizations.

From there, consider how easy the system is to use. Platforms should be intuitive and allow you to access information with a few clicks. Dashboards should be clean and easy to read, giving you access to all other platform areas without having to remember how to get there.

A final component is flexibility. Most HRIS systems can be customized so that you can work the way that meets your needs. Even within the tiered plans, look for the ability to customize dashboards and make the program work for your company. Each company is unique and will have a different set of priorities when it comes to HRIS solutions.

Benefits of HRIS Systems

Getting a reputable HRIS system can significantly benefit your company. Here are some key benefits of using an HRIS software solution:

  • Organization: An HRIS system keeps personnel data on hand and easily accessible. Folders store files in an organized fashion that helps HR administrators find what they need in a flash.
  • Regulatory compliance: Automated onboarding and offboarding protocols make businesses less likely to run into compliance issues.
  • Positive face to employees: The employee portal gives employees access to information that they would otherwise need to contact someone for. This saves everyone time and is a good way to engage employees and keep them happy.
